3. More about Lights… Whale Oil was the main oil to light street lamps. UNTILL… Walter Murdock, a Scottish inventor found out that coal gas could burn for lamps. Street lamps appeared in other small towns across America around 1875. You got paid $13.33 to go around and light the street lamps.
